- I learned the importance of conducting thorough research. I definitely need to allow more time for research. This is a time-consuming process but one that cannot be completed by taking shortcuts. It took me by surprise that I couldn’t find much information on others who had attempted similar projects. In fact, I didn’t find any direct information documenting that others have attempted similar projects to that which I have proposed. However, this lack of information has prompted me to think more critically about this project. It has led me to the conclusion that the pilot of this project is imperative. Furthermore, complete and thorough research is very important.
- The research process also opened my eyes to other areas of this project I hadn’t considered such as the internal training of staff. Although I don’t necessarily expect that everyone needs to know the specific details of PowerPoint it may be necessary to provide some PowerPoint tutorial assistance for support staff. These are the individuals that will probably be actually constructing the PowerPoint presentations/tutorials and may need the details of how to use advanced features of PowerPoint. Therefore, some of the websites I found online will come in handy as a resource.
- Although I am thrilled that both the director and assistant director of the Office of Special Education and Early Intervention Services are excited about the prospects of using this as a resource to communicate to special education educators across the state, I hadn’t anticipated they would have additional ideas of how they propose using these StAIRs for training purposes. This was a pleasant surprise to me but it also reminds me that I need to remain flexible.
I will know I have been successful with full implementation of this TechQuest project when administrators across the State are aware of this resource, use it, and ask for more. There are programs available that track the number of times a website is visited. This would help with determining the use of the resource. I also plan to use surveys to gather information. I’ll use SurveyMonkey to construct a survey requesting information after they have had an opportunity to view the StAIR and report on its use and effectiveness.
You are so incredibly lucky to have such supportive administrators to work with. That can't be said of many work environments. As I was reading through this post, two areas you might want to consider researching for this project came to mind - computer assisted instruction (CAI) and maybe even characteristics of effective distance learning lesson materials/resources, since you will be covering both, with this marvelous project. Just wondering, if you might want to consider sharing information by way of videos and screencasts. The videos could be sprinkled between some StAIRS - that way, you won't have to build so many StAIRS - just a thought=8-) I am really looking forward to reading your paper. The special education teacher in me, is mighty curious!
ReplyDeleteJulie,
ReplyDeleteI find your reflection very honest. I, like you, tend to approach new projects with an underestimate of how long it will take me! I'm glad to read you are not discouraged about the amount of time it will take, but rather more realistic about it. I don't think, until reading this post, I understood that you planned on getting feedback from people who complete your StAIR tutorial with Survey Monkey. (Maybe I just missed this idea before). I think this is a great way to see how much your resource is being used, and allow for a way to know where adjustments like to be made. I also like Susan's suggestion about imbedding video into your StAIRs. I am a new fan of video, and from listening to your podcast, you have a good voice for it! Gosh, I really can't think of any suggestions for you, as I think your reflection, again, was very honest and thoughtful! Good luck with the final paper!
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your techquest draft and following its progress over the course of the summer, I really believe you have identified a serious problem and proposed an innovative and realistic solution. The enthusiasm of your administrators only reinforces the potential success and reach your project can gain. I really don't have any other suggestions or feedback beyond what I have already mentioned in reviewing your draft.
Excellent work! While there is a lot of effort and collaboration left to fully implement your work, I think your research and carefully laid out plans will really enable your success!
